Multiple Power Trips in Server Room on 9 May 2011

Around 8.05 AM to 8.42 AM Observation: Still no network and internet access in other rooms except Server Room and PPTM Room. PCs in the other rooms still have IP Addresses started with 169 > Early Hypothesis: Rogue Router is giving out DHCP addresses to those problematic PCs > Suspected Router: The one in the Cafe's VIP Room which A has installed on Friday > Action Taken: Switch off the router > Restart PC >Result: Failed to regain network and internet access > Action Taken: Restart Core Switches > Restart PC > Result: Failed to regain network and internet access > Action Taken: Restart Switch in the Library > Restart PC in the Library > Result: Failed to regain network and internet access

Around 9.01 AM to 9.20 AM Observation: Still no network and internet access in other rooms except Server Room and PPTM Room. PCs in the other rooms still have IP Addresses started with 169 > Early Hypothesis: Rogue Router is giving out DHCP addresses to those problematic PCs > Suspected Router: The one in the Staff Training Unit's Room which has been reported by S to be quite crazy lately > Action Taken: Switch off the router > Restart Server Farm > Restart Core Switches > A few minutes before that, S had switched on the Switch on R8 > Result: Successfully regain network and internet access

** Apparently someone had switched off the switch in R8 by mistake. Even so, it should not affect the network to this extend. By right, all the other switches should still be able to work with or without this switch as they can go through the other network route. However, according to Mr. B (previous PPTM F29), there is something wrong with the switch. The original switch has broken and therefore replaced with a new switch but people responsible did not properly configure the switch. That is why this happen.

Around 11.00 AM Cannot access wireless internet > Got No Internet Access Complaint from a Staff > The Staff's PC's IP Address started with 169 (click Start > Run > Type cmd and press Enter > type ipconfig and press Enter) > Early Hypothesis: Someone switched off the switch again > Action Taken: Investigate Server > Observation: All Server and Network Hardwares including UPS in Server Room are Down > Conclusion: Power Trip > Action Taken: Reset Main Switch Box for Server Room > Result: Successfully regain network and internet access

Around 11.30 AM No Internet Access alert on my laptop -> Observation: Noise in Server Room suddenly quiet down > Early Hypothesis: Power Trip again > Action Taken: Investigate Server > Observation: All Server and Network Hardwares including UPS in Server Room are Down > Conclusion: Power Trip > Action Taken: Reset Main Switch Box for Server Room > Result: Successfully regain network and internet access
