What do Ethnic Malay and Malay Race mean?

"ETHNIC" MALAYS vs MALAY "RACE"

Also, "Malays" as an ethnicity and "Malays" as a race are commonly mistaken to be the same thing. The ethnic Malays, are an ethnic group from Southeast Asia who speak the Malay language or Malay dialect/creole as a native toungue. The Malay race is the ENTIRE region of Austronesia, meaning all the way from the African island of Madagascar to Hawaii's easternmost tip. Meaning that Samoans, Tongans, Fijians, Filipinos, Hawaiians and Madagascar Africans are all "Malays" by "race". So, "Malay race" is just a generic term for the Austronesian race so to speak.

Hikari's response:

O_o That is... interesting. While I don't agree with her at some points, I am curious about the issue of the difference between the definition of ethnic and race she brought up. I thought they're the same but apparently she's right, they're not.

The traditional definition of race and ethnicity is related to biological and sociological factors respectively. Race refers to a person's physical appearance, such as skin color, eye color, hair color, bone/jaw structure etc. Ethnicity, on the other hand, relates to cultural factors such as nationality, culture, ancestry, language and beliefs.

Ethnicity is a cultural phenomenon, while race is a biological and anthropological phenomenon. The ethnicity that you identify yourself can change over the course of your life, but your racial composition cannot.

"Ethnicity" means membership with a group of people who share similar customs and traditions. For example, if an Ethiopian man moves to Germany and gains citizenship; then his/her nationality is German, but his/her ethnicity is still Ethiopian. However, if he/she decides to abandon his Ethiopian heritage and assimilate into German society (speak the German language, adopt German style of dress, observe German customs and traditions, etc), he/she can make a legitimate claim that he/she is of German ethnicity.

His/her race, on the other hand, is Hamitic. His/her physical attributes and genetic composition is inherited and therefore cannot alter.
